Should I take Arnis, or Jiu-Jitsu, or both?

Although Arnis and Jiu-Jitsu are complete styles unto themselves and work perfectly fine alone in a self-defense situation, you'll find that both are complimentary to each other and has different strengths. Further, the more absorption into any martial art(s), and the more hours you train in any martial art(s), the faster and better you will become at each different art and at fighting in general. You never know when you are going to be attacked, as such, it makes sense to train as hard and as often as your body can safely handle sooner rather than later.

Why should I take your Combative Art or Martial Arts?

The reasons for training at Frederiksen's Combative Arts are to gain real world self-defense methods which are practised by law enforcement, military, and bodyguards world wide, in a dedicated yet calm atmosphere. We focus on learning how to end fights, not on learning eastern meditation, religion or philosophy. There are no forms or meditation. If the latter is the kind of martial art you are looking for, look elsewhere.

Is this a sport thing or a self-defense thing?

Self-defense. All attack / counter-attack sequences are engineered to end violent confrontations quickly and effectively, not score points. However, we do have a sports grappling class for youngsters (see below).

What's better: stand up fighting or grappling?

Neither is better or worse and both have their strengths and disadvantages. Although training to ground fight is important and an essential part of our training repertoire as many street / bar fights end up on the ground, we train to stay on our feet as long and as stable as possible. This has many advantages, including taking on multiple attackers and simply running away if needs be. If we go to the ground, we always try to obtain and maintain a dominant position, for the same reasons as above, and end the confrontation quickly and effectively.

How physical is the training? I have a bad knee/shoulder/elbow/etc...

No matter what your size, gender, or temperament, anyone can learn our system to be effective at defending themselves. Also, if you don't want to spar or do anything too aggressive on the body, you don't have to do anything you are not comfortable with. There are plenty of people to train with and we expect everyone to go to their own limit, and slowly build that limit up as they feel comfortable.

Further, all joint manipulations, chokes, holds and throws, are taught static first and supervised by a certified martial arts professional. For more information see our Training Methodology page.

I'm female and I'm thinking of taking your courses. Are your courses made for people of smaller stature?
