Training MethodologyFrederiksen's Combative Arts is for adults seeking to learn the most brutally effective self-defense and aggressor control techniques. This is not a sport but training for real world confrontation. As such, the following is intended to be a brief description of our training Philosophy: Fight how I train - Train how I fight The instructors at Frederiksen's Combative Arts are professionals with real world combat experience. We know that under pressure human beings will resort to fighting the way that they trained, not in some fanciful movie style. Therefore, Frederiksen's Combative Arts has developed a curriculum that takes into account fatigue, wounds and real world stress to make sure your training is as practical and effective as possible in the real world. New techniques are at first practiced slowly and are broken down into stages for ease of learning and safety this is referred to as a static technique. Once you are comfortable with the technique, speed and moderate resistance is introduced until the technique is fluid. After many repetitions competence will develop to the point that you will respond without conscious thought at full speed. At this point you will be tested for your next level. A dynamic environment is full speed, with full contact. Dynamic training is carried out in scenario training, during sparring and grappling sessions. Our training also includes drills, sport specific stretches, and some minor cardio and strength training. To maximize on fight training time, students are expected to train their own cardio and strength training regimes on their own time. That being said, many students stay fit simply relying on the classes and most importantly attending regularly. There are no forms or kata to learn (except for Ba Gua). We are here to learn to defend ourselves, not meditate. Private lessons are of course possible, and many club members are experts in other martial arts and are willing and happy to train with newcomers on an informal basis in open class as well as in regular class.
The student will demonstrate the curriculum from previous belt levels and the next level they are working towards. Each belt level has a knowledge base that must be fully understood before testing. A student will be told when they are eligible to test or the student may ask to test if he/she feels ready. A Sensei will conduct an informal pre-test to identify if there are any shortcomings. Then a testing time and date will be made. The conduct of a formal test will be explained by the Sensei. Speed, Surprise, Violence of Action Taken directly from world recognized military close quarter combat tactics. If your martial arts training does not take into account the necessary use of speed, surprise and violence of action you may end up wounded or worse. At Frederiksen's Combative Arts we incorporate every possible scenario type and take into account these three important rules into every attack and defense.
The mixed martial arts craze notwithstanding, at Frederiksen's Combative Arts we train both ultra effective stand up fighting using weapons (knives, sticks, batons, kubatons, etc) and impact techniques, locks, holds, takedowns, pressure points, joint manipulation and chokes. However, although we do not train to go to the ground, we know real fights often end up there. As such, our repertoire includes the most effective and comprehensive grappling techniques known to any martial art. Unarmed vs Weapons How many hours do you spend defending against weapons attacks at your current martial arts school? Many (if not most) street confrontations involve some form of weapon. Are you ready to defend against a knife or beer bottle with confidence? Using Jiu-Jitsu and Arnis Alambra, Frederiksen's Combative Arts uses the best and most effective unarmed vs. weapons attacks and scenarios know to man. You will successfully learn how to defend against nearly all forms of melee weapons, most notably knives, screwdrivers, sticks, and batons and more! Weapons vs Weapons At Frederiksen's Combative Arts we train to be the predator, and not the prey. To be effective at self-defense one must use any advantage at their disposal. That's why we train in self-defense weapons such as knife, stick, and kubaton to name a few. Our weapons training in these melee weapons is practical, ultra effective, and are unparalleled anywhere. Real World Situation Attacks - Car, Street Clothes, Parking Lot, etc. How well does your crescent kick work when you are sitting in your
car? Do you expect to be attacked in your Dojo? Many (if not most)
people are attacked by surprise in a less than ideal place for a fight
such as a dark parking lot, back alley, and especially your car. Also,
in less than ideal clothes and footwear. It is a fact that humans
fight how they train. That's why Frederiksen's Combative Arts training
includes situation awareness and attacks in street clothes, in your
car, and in parking lots to make sure you are as comfortable as possible
in any hostile environment where you are likely to get attacked. We
also train you to use everyday implements as weapons such as the seat
belt, steering wheel, car door, rake, shovel, pool cue, pool ball,
keys, shirt, jacket, purse, etc. |
